TOKYO — Kao Corp. reported first-half net profits this week that were up 10.5 percent year-on-year to 32.4 billion yen, or $304.4 million at average exchange.

Fourth-quarter profits at Alberto-Culver Co. almost quadrupled to $147.1 million, from $36.5 million a year ago, because of gains from the sale of its Cederroth International AB consumer products unit.

TOKYO — Shiseido revised upward its first-half earnings projection for the six months ended Sept. 30, due to lower-than-expected costs.
